Your first chat
- Add an API key. Ask Writrex uses the keys already saved in Writrex → Settings. See AI providers.
- Open Ask Writrex. Go to Writrex → Ask Writrex, or click the round button in the bottom-right corner of any admin screen.
- Ask a question. For example: "Analyse my whole site and show me the most important SEO issues." Answers stream in as they are written; use Stop, Regenerate or Edit on your message at any time.
- Review the change cards it suggests and apply the ones you want.
Provider, model and effort
Use the model menu at the top of the chat to pick the provider, model and effort for that chat. You can switch mid-chat. Models are discovered live from your API key.
| Effort | What it does |
|---|---|
| Low | Fastest, fewest tokens |
| Medium | Balanced (recommended) |
| High | Thinks longer on hard tasks |
If a model is busy or rate limited, Ask Writrex moves to another model from the same provider. It never switches provider on its own; if the chat's provider has no key, it tells you and points to the model menu. OpenAI and Claude appear on plans that include multiple AI providers (every paid plan). In Writrex Lite, a paid Gemini API plan gives the best results, because Gemini's free tier has low limits.
What Ask Writrex can read
- A whole-site overview: theme, SEO plugin, page builders, content counts and the latest SEO report score
- Any page or post: SEO title and description, headings, images and ALT text, links, word count and block layout
- The live page as a logged-out visitor sees it, including headings and SEO tags printed by your theme. Drafts, private and password-protected pages are never loaded this way.
- Your media library, menus and Additional CSS
- A full SEO scan, run on request
Instructions hidden inside your site content are treated as data and ignored.
Change cards
Every suggested fix appears as a change card with a before-and-after preview and four actions:
| Action | What happens |
|---|---|
| Preview on site | Shows the change on the real page before anything is saved |
| Apply | Checks the page hasn't changed since the suggestion, then writes the change and records it in Change History |
| I'll do it myself | Closes the card without changing anything, so you can make the edit yourself |
| Dismiss | Rejects the suggestion |
What a change card can change
- SEO title, meta description, focus keyphrase and canonical URL, written to Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All in One SEO, SEOPress or The SEO Framework, or printed by Writrex if there is no SEO plugin
- Image ALT text
- Page title, excerpt, slug and featured image
- An exact piece of page text, a single block, or a heading's wording and level
- Links: re-point or remove links to an address across a page
- Phone numbers and email addresses: turn plain text into clickable links
- Site styling through Additional CSS (unsafe CSS is refused)
- New posts and pages, always saved as drafts
Safety checks
- Stale page. If the page changed after the suggestion was made, Apply stops instead of overwriting newer edits.
- No H1 left. A change that would leave the live page with no H1 heading is refused. If the live page cannot be loaded, the card shows a warning instead.
- Page builders. Elementor, Divi, WPBakery and other builder pages are detected. SEO fields, ALT text, featured images and site CSS can still be changed; layout edits that could break the builder are not offered.
- Permissions. You can only apply changes your WordPress role already allows.
- Out of reach. Ask Writrex never edits PHP, theme files, plugins or the database directly.
SEO Reports
Open Writrex → SEO Reports and run a scan. Each report is saved with a site score, and every issue has a Fix with Ask Writrex button that opens a chat focused on that issue.
The essential checks cover:
- SEO titles and meta descriptions that are missing, too long or too short
- Missing or doubled H1 headings, checked against the live page
- Skipped heading levels and thin content
- Images without ALT text
- Broken internal links and links to unpublished pages
- Pages hidden from search, or with a canonical pointing elsewhere
- Phone numbers and emails that aren't clickable
The Bulk Meta Fixer (SEO Repair) screen rewrites meta titles and descriptions in bulk; it links to SEO Reports for the wider audit.
Change History
Writrex → Change History lists every change made through Ask Writrex: what changed, who approved it and when, with search, filters and an Undo button. Content edits also keep a WordPress revision.
Floating button and mini chat
A round Ask Writrex button sits in the bottom-right corner of every admin screen, including the block editor (but not the Ask Writrex page itself). It opens a mini chat; on an edit screen the chat focuses on that page. Use the expand button (Open full chat page) to continue on the chat page. You can also show the button on your website while logged in; visitors never see it.
Ask Writrex settings
Open the chat page and click Ask Writrex settings at the bottom of the chat list. Administrators only.
| Setting | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Default AI provider | Provider for new chats. Providers without a saved key are greyed out. | Gemini |
| Default model | Model for new chats | The recommended model |
| Default effort | Low, Medium or High for new chats | Medium |
| Send page text to the AI provider | Off = Ask Writrex sees only titles, SEO fields and page structure, never the page text | On |
| Let Editors use Ask Writrex | Editors can only apply changes to content they could already edit | On |
| Show the Ask Writrex button on admin screens | The floating button and mini chat | On |
| Also show it on the website while logged in | Only you and other users who can use Ask Writrex see it | Off |
Chat history and export
Chats are saved in the sidebar, with search, rename and delete. Export any chat from its menu or the chat header: Export (Markdown) downloads a .md file, and Copy for another AI puts it on your clipboard. Exports include proposed changes but never tool results or API keys.
What is sent to the AI provider
When you send a message, Ask Writrex sends your message, the earlier messages in that chat, your site's name and address, and the site information it looks up to answer: page titles, SEO fields, headings, links, image file names and ALT text, menus, custom CSS, SEO report findings, and page text unless you turn Send page text to the AI provider off. Your API key, passwords and users' emails are never sent.
- OpenAI requests are made with storage switched off.
- Anthropic Claude requests use prompt caching, which keeps the repeated part of a chat on Anthropic's servers for a few minutes so follow-up steps cost less.

Moving from Writrex Lite and uninstalling
Activating Writrex carries your Ask Writrex chats, SEO reports and Change History across from Writrex Lite. Chats, reports and Change History are deleted on uninstall only when Delete all Writrex settings and data is on in Settings → Data & Uninstall. Your pages and posts are never touched.
Troubleshooting
| Message or symptom | What to do |
|---|---|
| Provider shows "no key" | Add that provider's API key in Writrex → Settings, or pick another provider in the model menu. |
| Rate limit or model busy | Ask Writrex tries another model from the same provider. If all are busy, wait a minute or raise your provider's limits. |
| Billing or credit error | Your provider account needs billing or credit. Check it in the provider's dashboard. |
| Card warns the live page could not be checked | The page could not be loaded as a visitor (for example a firewall blocks loopback requests). You can still apply, but check the H1 yourself. |
| Apply stopped: the page changed | Someone edited the page after the suggestion. Ask Writrex to look again and make a fresh suggestion. |
| Changes look old after an update | Clear your browser and page cache; Ask Writrex files are versioned, so a hard refresh is usually enough. |
