Accessibility statement

We want writrex.com to be usable by everyone, including people who use a keyboard, a screen reader or a magnifier.

In short. We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA on this website. The default dark design has some secondary grey text and in-text links that fall short of the AA contrast rules, so we offer the accessibility menu (light and high contrast colours, underlined links and more) to fix that on request. We have not had an independent audit, so other problems may remain. If you find one, tell us at hello@writrex.com and we will fix it.

The accessibility menu

Use the round accessibility button at the bottom left of every page. Nothing changes unless you pick an option, and your choices are saved on your device only. You can:

  • Make text larger, in three steps.
  • Switch to a light colour scheme or a high contrast one. The default site is dark.
  • Use a more readable font, wider text spacing, underlined links, a stronger focus outline or a larger cursor.
  • Pause animations. We also respect your device's "reduce motion" setting automatically.
  • Have the page, or text you have selected, read aloud with your browser's own voice, with pause, stop and speed controls.
  • Reset everything with one button.

What is built in for everyone

  • A "Skip to content" link, one main heading per page, and labelled navigation areas.
  • The whole site works with a keyboard. Menus open with the keyboard and close with Escape, wide tables can be scrolled with the keyboard, and the focus outline is visible.
  • Images and diagrams have text alternatives, and purely decorative graphics are hidden from screen readers.
  • Pages work at phone width and when you zoom in.

How we test

We run an automated check (axe-core) on our main pages at desktop and phone width, in the default view and with each menu option switched on, and we fix every failure it reports. We also check keyboard use of the menus by hand. Automated tools find only part of the possible problems, so this is not a guarantee of full conformance.

Known limitations

  • In the default view, some secondary text is lighter than the AA contrast ratio. High contrast mode fixes this.
  • Pausing animations stops the visual effects straight away. A few scroll-linked effects fully stop after you reload the page.
  • Third-party services we link to, such as the checkout, are outside our control.
  • The Writrex WordPress plugin screens have not been checked to the same standard yet. They follow the WordPress admin patterns.
