They are also one of the easiest ways to get a site quietly pushed down the results. The difference comes down to one thing: whether each page gives someone in that place a real reason to choose you, or just swaps the town name into a template.

This guide covers what Google counts as a doorway page, a simple test you can run on your own pages, what a strong location page contains, how many to build, and how to use AI without creating the thin, mass-produced content Google’s spam policies target.

What Google counts as a doorway page

Google’s spam policies describe doorways as pages built to rank for a group of very similar searches rather than to be useful in their own right. They either push visitors on to somewhere else, or they are so alike that they read more like a page of search results than a real part of your site.

For local businesses, the patterns that cause trouble look like this:

Near-identical pages for a list of towns, where only the place name changes

Pages for areas you don’t actually serve, created because the keyword has search volume

Thin pages whose only job is to send visitors to a contact form or the home page

Hundreds of location pages reachable only through a block of town names in the footer

There is no fixed number of pages that counts as “too many”. What gets flagged is the pattern: lots of pages, very little difference between them, and nothing a visitor couldn’t get from one general services page.

Since Google’s March 2024 update, this also sits under its scaled content abuse policy. That policy covers pages mass-produced mainly to rank, whether a person, a template or AI wrote them. How the page was made matters far less than whether it helps anyone.

The swap test: is your page a doorway?

Open one of your location pages and mentally replace the town name with a different town. Now read it again.

If every sentence is still true, the page has nothing local about it. That is exactly the pattern search engines are built to spot, and exactly what a customer notices when they land on it.

A second question helps too, and it comes from Google’s own guidance on helpful content: would you create this page if search engines didn’t exist? A page telling people in Leeds how quickly you can reach them, which parts of the city you cover and what you’ve fixed there recently is useful to a Leeds customer. A page that exists only to catch the search “plumber Leeds” is a doorway waiting to happen.

When a location page is legitimate

A location page earns its place when three things are true:

You genuinely serve the area. You could take a job there this week without it being a special trip.

You have something specific to say about it. Work you’ve done there, how the service differs there, or local conditions that change the job.

People there search for what you do. They type the service with the place name, or search from inside the area.

If any of the three is missing, the page is weak before you write a word. Fix the gap first, or leave that area off your list for now.

What a strong local landing page contains

The best local landing pages share a structure. None of these sections is complicated, but together they make a page that could only ever be about one place.

A headline that pairs the service with the place

Use an H1 like “Emergency plumber in Leeds”, then open with the three things a local visitor wants to know straight away: do you cover my area, how fast can you get here, and roughly what will it cost. Answer them in the first few lines.

Proof that you work there

This is the section most location pages skip, and it matters most. Include as much of this as you honestly can:

Recent jobs in the area, with the neighbourhood or street named where the customer is happy for you to do so

Photos from real jobs there, not stock images

Reviews that mention the area by name

Your typical response time to that area

Where your team is based relative to it

Service detail that changes by location

Think about what is genuinely different about doing the job there. For a plumber, that might be the age of the housing stock, common problems in older terraces, or parking and access in the city centre. For a builder, it might be conservation areas and local planning quirks. For a cleaning company, it could be the mix of student lets and family homes.

These are the sentences that pass the swap test: they would be wrong on any other page.

A local FAQ built from real enquiries

Look through your call notes, emails and chat logs for questions people in that area actually ask. “Do you charge extra to come out to Otley?” is a far better FAQ than “Why choose us?”, because a real person asked it and the answer is specific.

A clear next step

Give visitors a phone number that works on mobile with one tap, confirm that you cover their postcode, and make booking simple. Keep your business name, address and phone number identical across every page and your Google Business Profile.

Links to related pages

Link to the parent service page, to two or three neighbouring areas, and to any case studies from that area. This helps visitors, and it gives search engines a clear map of how your pages fit together.

How much unique content is enough?

There is no percentage threshold. Tools that score a page as “70% unique” measure wording, not usefulness. You could run a template through a rewording tool and hit any score you like, and the page would still be a doorway.

A more useful rule: every location page should contain at least five facts that would be wrong on any other location page. Shared material such as your company introduction, guarantees and accreditations is fine. Keep it short and put it below the local content, not above it.

Length follows the facts. Most good location pages end up somewhere between 500 and 1,200 words, but a 500-word page packed with local proof will beat a 1,500-word page padded out with the history of the town.

How many location pages should you build?

Start with the places where you already have proof, not the list of towns with the highest search volume. A tiered approach works well:

Areas you work in every week. These get their own full location pages, because you have the jobs, reviews and photos to fill them.

Areas you cover now and then. Group these into a regional page, such as “Plumbers across North Leeds”, that names each area and what you’ve done there.

Places you would travel to but rarely do. These don’t need a dedicated page. Mention them on a general coverage page instead.

Ten strong pages will outperform a hundred thin ones. Add new location pages as you collect real proof from new areas, and your coverage grows on a foundation that holds up.

Service area businesses vs businesses with premises

Location pages describe where you work. They should never imply offices you don’t have.

If you visit customers rather than having them visit you, you’re a service area business. Google Business Profile guidelines ask you to hide your address and set the areas you serve instead. Setting up virtual offices or borrowed addresses to get a profile in every town breaks those guidelines and can get profiles suspended.

If you do have real branches, give each one its own page with that branch’s address, opening hours, phone number and team, and link it to that branch’s own Business Profile.

Site structure and internal linking for location pages

Location pages need a clear home in your site structure. A simple pattern:

A service page, such as
/plumbing/

An areas page that lists every location you cover

Individual location pages, such as
/plumbing/leeds/

A few rules keep this healthy:

Every location page should be reachable through your normal navigation within a few clicks, not only through the sitemap or a footer block.

Link each location page to its parent service and to its nearest neighbouring areas.

Link from blog posts and case studies to the area where the work happened.

Use breadcrumbs so both visitors and search engines can see the hierarchy.

Watch out for pages that compete with each other. If
/plumber-leeds/
and
/emergency-plumber-leeds/
both target the same searches, Google has to pick one, and it may pick the weaker page. Merge them unless the intent is genuinely different. Internal linking and overlap detection makes these conflicts much easier to spot across a large site.

Technical checks for every location page

Before a location page goes live, check the basics:

A unique title and meta description that include the service and the place

A self-referencing canonical tag, not one pointing to the home page or another location

Indexable and included in your XML sitemap

LocalBusiness schema (or the right subtype) with an
areaServed
value that matches the page. Never add an address to schema that you don’t actually trade from. Structured data handled properly saves a lot of manual work here.

Fast on mobile, with a click-to-call number near the top

After publishing, check the Page indexing report in Google Search Console. If location pages show up as “Duplicate, Google chose different canonical than user”, Google thinks they are too similar to another page. Treat that as a direct signal to add more local substance.

Using AI to write local landing pages safely

AI is not the problem. Unsupervised scale is. Google judges content on its quality, not on how it was produced, but its scaled content abuse policy exists precisely because AI made it cheap to publish thousands of near-identical pages.

The safe way to use AI for location pages:

Collect the local facts first. Jobs, reviews, local conditions, real questions and pricing notes for each area.

Give the AI facts, not just a keyword and a town. The output can only be as specific as the input.

Run the swap test on every page before it goes live.

Have someone who knows the business review it. They will catch claims that sound plausible but aren’t true.

Publish in batches and watch indexing in Search Console before adding more.

This is the approach Writrex is built around. Brand profiles hold your real case studies, pricing and tone of voice, so each page is written from your facts rather than generic filler. A 38-check quality gate holds back weak pages before they publish, and overlap warnings flag pages that would compete with ones you already have.

Fixing location pages you already have

If you already have a set of thin location pages, you don’t need to delete everything. Start by checking Search Console for pages marked “Crawled – currently not indexed” and pages with impressions but almost no clicks. Then decide page by page:

Improve pages for areas you genuinely serve and have proof from. Add the local facts described above.

Merge several thin pages for nearby towns into one regional page, and 301 redirect the old URLs to it.

Remove pages for areas you don’t really serve, and redirect them to the most relevant page you keep.

Cutting weak location pages can help the strong ones, because your internal links and Google’s crawl attention concentrate on the pages that deserve them.

Checklist before you publish a local landing page

You genuinely serve this area and can prove it.

The H1 pairs the service with the place.

The opening answers coverage, response time and rough cost.

The page includes at least five facts that would be wrong on any other location page.

It shows real proof: jobs, photos or reviews from the area.

The FAQ comes from real customer questions.

The page passes the swap test.

The title and meta description are unique to this page.

The canonical is self-referencing and the page is indexable.

The schema matches the page, with no invented addresses.

The page links to its parent service and its neighbouring areas.

It is reachable through normal navigation, not just the footer.

Frequently asked questions

Are location pages against Google’s guidelines?
No. Location pages are fine when each one gives people in that area useful, specific information. Google’s doorway policy targets near-identical pages created only to rank, not location pages in general.

How many location pages can a website have?
There is no official limit. The risk comes from creating more pages than you have genuine local substance for. Build pages for areas where you have real work and proof, and group smaller areas into regional pages.

Can I use the same template for every location page?
You can use the same layout and design. The content inside it needs to change in substance, not just the town name. Aim for at least five location-specific facts per page.

Do location pages need a physical address?
No. Service area businesses can have strong location pages without an address in each town. Never list an address you don’t trade from, on the page, in schema or on Google Business Profile.

Will Google penalise AI-written location pages?
Not for being AI-written. Google penalises mass-produced pages that add little value, however they were made. AI location pages built from real local facts and reviewed by a person can rank well.

Local landing pages work when every page could only ever be about one place. Build them from real proof, link them properly, and add new ones as your coverage grows.

Writrex generates local landing pages from your own business facts and checks every one before it goes live. Start with Writrex Lite for free.

What separates a local landing page that ranks from one Google treats as a doorway, and how to build location pages that prove you really work there.

[1
4,3,5
post-14","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-local-seo","tag-doorway-pages","tag-location-pages","tag-service-area-pages

Local Landing Pages: How to Avoid Doorway-Page Risk | Writrex

<meta name="description" content="Build local landing pages that rank without breaking Google's doorway-page rules.
